AWS Local Zones

"Place resources closer to end-users in major cities."

What is AWS Local Zones?

AWS Local Zones are an extension of an AWS Region that places compute, storage, and database services closer to large population, industry, and IT centers where no AWS Region exists today.

Key Concepts

1. Extension of a Region

  • Example: You use the US-West-2 (Oregon) region, but your users are in Los Angeles.
  • You can deploy resources into the Los Angeles Local Zone (which is managed by the Oregon region Parent).

2. Single-Digit Millisecond Latency

  • Great for latency-sensitive applications that need to be close to end-users in specific cities (e.g., Houston, Miami, Boston).

Exam Tips

[!IMPORTANT] "Latency sensitive apps in a specific city/metro area" (where no full Region exists): The answer is AWS Local Zones.

[!NOTE] Availability Zones are within a Region. Local Zones are extensions outside the Region's physical location but logically attached to it.

Common Use Cases

  • Media & Entertainment: Video rendering in Hollywood (LA).
  • Real-time Gaming: Multiplayer servers near player hubs.
  • Hybrid Migration: Migrating a datacenter in a specific city to a nearby Local Zone.
